Tebogo Mabuka
Joined ALA in 2009
My name is Tebogo and I am the last born in a family of four children supported by a single mother. I was raised in Pretoria (Maboloka) but spent my formative years in Vosloorus.
I began my primary education in Polokegong Primary School where I graduated top of my class. I then attended Masithwalisane Secondary School, and placed in the top five for five consecutive years. While in Masithwalisane I co-founded Eco club an environmental club that seeks to bring awareness to students about how to contribute towards sustaining our environment. As a student counsellor, I also had the great opportunity of advising my peers on how to improve their academic performance in addition to their confidence in tackling everyday obstacles.
I first learnt about ALA when my English teacher nominated myself and nine other students who made up the top ten performing students in my class. I believe I was chosen to be part of the class of 2011 not only because of my academic performance but because of the passion I have for service.
While at ALA, I served at the 2010-11 Chairlady of the Student government and also received the coveted honor of attending the Thabo Mbeki Youth Foundation Conference. I also served as the Communications Director for a student led Original Idea for Development which seeks to advocate for children living with disabilities to have access to mainstream education. GSIE’s three-pronged strategy is designed to advice policy makers throughout developing countries about how to create an inclusive environment for students living with disabilities.
My desire is to bring about change in Africa through politics, hence I plan on majoring in Political Science in University. I believe that this is an avenue that will bring about change in a larger scale; with policies that are focused on empowering Africans and ending the culture of corruption and other ills in our governments I believe that Africa will thrive in excellence.
