Cemone Hewetson
Languages Department
Born in the heart of the Free State, South Africa, Cemone Hewetson knew exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up. She wanted to make a positive change, to open minds and to lead... She became a teacher.
After graduating from the University of the Free State, with a BA (Education), majoring in English and Theatre and Dramatic Arts, she started her first teaching job at a culturally diverse school in the east of Johannesburg. Only then did she realise the immense gap created by the Apartheid years - not only on a cultural level, but also on an educational level. Her love for theatre and the dramatic arts became a way of life, not only teaching art at a drama school in Pretoria, but also as an award-nominated stage actress. The acting left her cold and far removed from her true passion and vocation in life – education.
Cemone has been teaching up to English AS level and Literature A level (Cambridge International system) for over six years. She has no intention of returning to the stage, after all “all the world’s a stage” according to the great Bard!
ALA is the perfect place for her to take that step, make that change, open that mind and lead the future leaders of Africa.
